Breaststroke drills in order of importance:
-
2 Kicks 1 Pull.
- How? Do 2 kicks each pull cycle.
- Why? The glide is the fastest part of the stroke, but many fail to hold it long enough or lose momentum by initiating the kick before entering streamline. During the 2K1P drill, you'll naturally hold the glide longer for kick #1, and then you'll be in fully in streamline for kick #2. You'll also feel the best body position for glide. Link to video of the drill.
-
Handcuff drill.
- How? Clasp your hands behind your back and swim breaststroke doing only the breath and the kick. You'll breath once every kick cycle just as you do in breaststroke.
- Why? This is a timing drill to make sure you're kicking after you're already in back in streamline after the breath is complete.
-
1 Up 1 Down.
- How? Alternate 1 regular stroke and one stroke completely underwater.
- Why? Increase undulation and find the best position for glide. Link to video of the drill. Link to video of the drill.
-
2 breast / 2 fly.
- How? Alternate 2 breaststroke strokes with 2 butterfly strokes.
- Why? Butterfly began as a faster way to swim breaststroke. Tying back to this in a drill can boost undulation of head and body to boost your technique.
